Padikolam can be roughly translated to Step kolam as the padi referred is the steps in a temple tank or pond. The water body in temples are usually enclosed with steps on four sides and they form a pattern around the pond.
Usually the ponds are square in shape so as the padikolams has square as the centre pattern. The centres are filled with colour or kaavi and lines are drawn either in even numbers or odd numbers.
