Draw for this coming Diwali and decorate with your favourite colours and diyas to make it grand.

Padikolam can be roughly translated to Step kolam as the padi referred is the steps in a temple tank or pond. The water body in temples are usually enclosed with steps on four sides and they form a pattern around the pond. Usually the ponds are square in shape so as the padikolams has square as the centre pattern. The centres are filled with colour or kaavi and lines are drawn either in even numbers or odd numbers.

Kolams are drawn on the front yard as an inviting element to invite Goddess Lakshmi the Goddess of wealth into home. And drawing feet of Goddess Lakshmi is auspicious and a symbol of inviting Lakshmi. Many draw Lakshmi padam on the side of the entrance so that no one stamps on the sacred symbol.

First the design is outline wiht rangoli powder, then with ear buds or a match stick or finger is used to create impressions on the line, either a zigzag or a straight line is drawn on the rangoli line You can draw any type of design.

Small sikku kolams are posted in this post. These are done by Mrs.Sudha Subramanian on different days. The first two sikku kolams have a dot count of 7=1 and the last kolam has 9-1. She has added some extensions to enhance the kolam. These kolams are small and can be drawn on daily basis and ideal for apartment doorsteps.
